SANTA FE – Beginning May 1, thousands of New Mexicans receiving food assistance can participate in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Employment and Training (E&T) program to build job skills and meet federal work requirements for benefits.

The New Mexico Health Care Authority (HCA) is expanding access for 10,600 able-bodied adult SNAP customers to the SNAP E&T program which provides education and job training opportunities to help participants enter or re-enter the workforce. Individuals enrolled in the program can receive personalized support and credit toward SNAP work requirements.

“Our goal is to connect New Mexicans with meaningful training and support so they can move toward stable employment while maintaining access to essential food assistance,” said Acting Deputy Secretary Niki Kozlowski. “This program creates a pathway for people to build skills, explore careers and stay on track with federal requirements.”

The program provides several services, including job search training, supervised job search training, work experience, educational programs and job retention. Participants will be paired with case managers to help them explore career options, develop personal and professional skills, and overcome barriers to workforce entry or re-entry. Some program services may not be available in all counties.

Eligible adults ages 18 to 64 who receive SNAP benefits and are federally defined as able-bodied adults will need to contact their local Income Support Division office, or call HCA at 1-800-283-4465 and request to participate in the SNAP E&T program.
