15-member panel will guide policy for 800,000 beneficiaries
SANTA FE —New Mexico’s Medicaid program launched a 15-member advisory council last week to give beneficiaries direct input on policies affecting more than 800,000 state residents.
The New Mexico Health Care Authority (HCA) officially established the Medicaid Beneficiary Advisory Council on July 23, creating the state’s first channel for Medicaid members, families, and caretakers to advise program leadership on services and program administration.
“The council gives Medicaid members—people who have lived experience navigating the system firsthand—a meaningful way to add their voices and help shape improvements within Medicaid,” said Dana Flannery, Medicaid director.
The council aligns with federal guidelines from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services calling for greater member engagement. Members will meet quarterly online to advise leadership on enhancing access, quality and equity while identifying barriers and recommending solutions.
The council will elect leaders, write bylaws and submit annual reports. Over time, council representatives will comprise up to 25% of the existing Medicaid Advisory Committee, ensuring lived experience guides high-level decisions.
